One lottery drawing, two big winners – $1 million for one, $3 million for the other

Two happy lottery winners

Mega Millions jackpots sometimes become so large that even the second-level prizes are news. Consider the Mega Millions drawing on June 9, 2023.

Nobody won the mind-numbing jackpot of $240,000,000. But two lucky souls, one in each of the neighboring states of Indiana and Ohio, got five of the white ball numbers correctly. Missing only the gold “Mega ball,” each ticket qualified for the second prize.

Second prize sounds great. But how much money did they win?

This is where it gets interesting. Each ticket matched all five of the white ball numbers but missed the gold Mega ball number. The tickets are identical. But assuming both lucky winners claim their prizes, one of them will be considerably luckier, with a $3,000,000 prize compared to $1,000,000 for the other.

Nothing is wrong with an unexpected $1,000,000 coming your way. But we all know that with cash money, some is good, but more is better. I will explain the substantial difference between the two paydays shortly.

Who were the lucky second-prize winners?

We don’t know. As of this writing, this is a very recent drawing, and no information is available about the winning ticket holders.

In fact, if you bought a Mega Millions ticket in Indiana or Ohio for the June 9, 2023 drawing, you might want to watch the video below and check your numbers. One of the winners might be you!

What were the winning numbers?

Who sold each of the winning tickets?

Once again, as this was a very recent drawing, no information is yet available other than the states in which the winning tickets were sold. I will update the following map with exact location information as it becomes available.

The Megaplier, or how a single dollar made a two-million-dollar difference

A Mega Millions ticket costs two dollars. For an extra dollar, bringing your total ticket price to three dollars, you can purchase the Megaplier option.

This will increase the value of any non-jackpot winnings by a factor of 2, 3, 4, or 5 depending on a separate drawing.

The Megaplier number for the drawing described here was three.

For this drawing, the winning ticket purchased in Indiana included the Megaplier option. The winning ticket from Ohio did not. In return for an additional one dollar, the Indiana winner will receive an additional $2,000,000.

I have been playing Mega Millions for years and I have never heard of this “Megaplier.”

Do you live in California? There are many things to like about California, but its lottery rules, in my opinion, are not among them. Mega Millions is sold in 45 states in the USA, with the Megaplier option available in every state except California.

Windfall wealth on steroids!

Winning a million bucks from a big national lottery like Mega Millions certainly qualifies as windfall wealth. But adding an extra two million on top of it by spending another dollar — that is windfall wealth times two! It’s a remarkable story.
